Job Summary The Orthopedic Trauma Physician Assistant (PA) - Surgical Specialty (Operative) is a licensed, certified healthcare provider who delivers direct patient care in collaboration with orthopedic trauma surgeons. This role includes prescriptive authority and is credentialed and privileged as an independent provider recognized by Medicare and Medicaid. This position focuses on the management of acute orthopedic injuries, including fractures, musculoskeletal trauma, and post-surgical care. The PA participates in all aspects of perioperative care, including inpatient management, emergency department consults, surgical assistance, and outpatient follow-up. The provider works closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality, efficient, and patient-centered care. Essential Functions of the Role * Performs comprehensive and focused assessments of patients with acute orthopedic and traumatic injuries, including detailed histories and physical examinations. * Evaluates and manages fractures, dislocations, and other musculoskeletal injuries in both inpatient and emergency department settings. * Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests, including X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. * Assists in the operating room with orthopedic trauma procedures, including fracture fixation and related surgical interventions. * Performs procedures within scope of practice, such as fracture reductions, splinting, casting, wound care, and suture management. * Develops and implements evidence-based treatment plans in collaboration with supervising orthopedic trauma surgeons. * Provides pre-operative and post-operative care, including hospital rounding, discharge planning, and outpatient follow-up visits. * Monitors for complications such as infection, compartment syndrome, or delayed healing and initiates appropriate interventions. * Educates patients and families on injury management, surgical recovery, rehabilitation, and injury prevention. * Maintains accurate, timely, and compliant documentation of patient care and outcomes. * Coordinates care with physical therapy, case management, nursing, and other healthcare professionals. * Participates in call coverage and may provide care beyond regular schedules based on trauma service needs. Key Success Factors * Knowledge of orthopedic trauma principles, including fracture management, surgical techniques, and post-operative care. * Understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy, injury patterns, and rehabilitation protocols. * Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in high-acuity environments. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills. * Strong interpersonal and team collaboration abilities. * Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills in fast-paced clinical settings. * Proficiency in electronic medical records and healthcare technology. * Ability to develop and implement comprehensive, outcomes-driven treatment plans. * Skill in interpreting diagnostic imaging and laboratory results. Qualifications * Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program. * Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Texas. * Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). * Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire or transfer. * *Preferred:* Minimum of 2 years of experience in orthopedic surgery, trauma, emergency medicine, or a related surgical specialty.
